Making a Case for Natural Dyes

The work of Catharine Ellis has always combined both weaving and dyeing. After years of creating textiles using synthetic dyes, ten years ago Catharine made the decision to completely change her practice to incorporate only natural colorants. She will describe the reasons she made this decision, some of the challenges she faced, and how she has learned to use natural dyes to achieve complex, artistic results.

About the Artist
Catharine Ellis has been making textiles for over 40 years. After three decades of leading the Fiber Program at Haywood Community College in North Carolina she is now dedicated to studio work and teaching with a focus on natural dye processes. She continues to research and develop new applications of natural dyes in her own textiles and in her teaching. Catharine is the author of Woven Shibori, (Interweave Press, 2005). An updated edition, focused on natural dyes, was released in 2016. She exhibits her work and teaches in the U.S. and internationally. Catharine is currently researching and writing a book on natural dye practices with co-author, Joy Boutrup.
