Please welcome WGM’s new Education Manager, Betsy Konop!

The WGM Education Search Committee is thrilled to announce that after a careful search, Betsy Konop of Portland, Oregon has accepted the position of Education Manager with the Weavers Guild of Minnesota and begins her new role at WGM on August 1, 2018.

The WGM Education Search Committee did an extraordinary amount of work for this important this role, including: re-tooling the position, allocated proper resources to the role, position marketing and recruitment, resume screening utilizing a core skills/experience tool, a full day of interviewing, deliberations, and reference checks. The position call received nearly 100 applicants (a WGM record!) from all across the country and the competition was fierce. Special thanks to the committee members: Robert Bulthuis, Roberta Zeug Shell, Connie LaTendresse, Judith Preckshot and Beth Bowman for their commitment to finding the best fit for this important role.

It is with confidence that the committee presents to you: WGM’s new Education Manager, Betsy Konop!

Betsy has over a decade of experience working in the arts and collaborates with colleagues, artists, and community partners on dynamic and creative projects and programs. Her most recent post was with the Portland Art Museum as Education and Public Programs Assistant where she engaged a broad range of visitors on topics that are locally, nationally, and globally relevant. She managed the Museum’s ongoing monthly programs and work closely with the Associate Director of Education and Public Programs to develop programming and partnerships. Together, they oversaw 120-150 programs serving 18,000 people annually. In her role, she also managed the annual budgeting process and monitor spending for the Education and Public Programs Department.

Betsy is excited to work creatively on education programming focused more closely on weaving, spinning, and dyeing at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota. She appreciates and is interested in traditional knowledge around handweaving across cultures — and ways in which textiles intersect with other media and disciplines from fine art to art therapy, ethnomathematics, and technology. She sees the Education Manager position at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota as ripe with possibilities for creative, engaging programs and partnerships that bring people together across skill levels and interests. Betsy and her colleagues all felt that, although they will miss her deeply, that this specific position with WGM is Betsy’s “dream job” and a wonderful opportunity for both her and the WGM and greater creative community.

AND! Betsy is also a weaver! Check out this fun video of her doing a demonstration at the Portland Art Museum, The amazingly talented handweaver Betsy Konop is closing out #CraftingFashion.

Betsy begins her role on August 1, 2018 and will be in the office primarily Monday – Friday 9am-5pm and can be reached at bkonop@weaversguildmn.org.
