Magic Spinning and Knitting
with Annemor Sunbø

Explore the possibilities of ‘spelsau’ which is the original Norwegian sheep and spin a tale inspired by the ‘life thread.’ In this spinning and knitting workshop students learn about folklore and connection to the thread while spinning samples of different traditional yarns on a hand spindle. The magic of the folk life and belief continues as students create ‘suitors’ which are the threads of fate, – a thread is an extension of the hand…., and then knit a good fortune charm (troll or Norwegian wild cat) and gloves in a double knitting technique on two needles. Additional supplies will be available for purchase during the workshop.

Color-and-Weave
with Vicki Tardy

Vicki TardyColor-and-weave is a pattern effect produced by combining a weave structure with a dark/light color sequence in both warp and weft. The result is different from either the original woven structure or the dark/light sequence itself. In this workshop we explore this principle by weaving samples of many weave structures using a variety of dark/light color sequences. Included are plain weave, twills, huck, summer and winter, doubleweave and more on 4- and 8-shaft looms. Students learn to draft color-and-weave designs on graph paper and will work with numerous books and monographs on the subject so that the various drafting notations are understood.

878 Friday & Saturday, March 12 & 13, 2010: 9am-4pm
Looms are available to pre-warp March 8 – 11th
Level: Advanced Beginning - Advanced
Tuition: $230/$190 members | Materials Fee: $3
Prerequisites: Students must be able to warp a loom and read a draft independently.

Woven Pixel Techniques for Dobby Looms
with Alice Schlein

Alice SchleinLift plans will be suitable for straight threadings on 8 or more shafts (16 or more preferred), for networked threadings, or for advancing threadings which conform to networks. Lift plans may also be used on table looms. Participants will learn how to construct and store their own libraries of weave structures, use the many tools and filters in Photoshop to make their own designs, break down the designs into layers and apply the structures, and prepare weave-ready files which may be easily transferred into their weaving program and loom driver of choice. This is a computer-only workshop. No weaving will be done in class. Students must bring their own laptop computers (Mac or Windows) with a weaving program and Adobe Photoshop already loaded.

Double Weave Diversity: Beyond the Basics
with Jennifer Moore

Jennifer MooreIn this round robin workshop participants will explore what can be done with multiple layers of cloth on a multi-shaft loom. We will be weaving samples and studying the theory behind a variety of structures including 4-layer weaves, double-width twill cloth, multi-layer color blending, doubleweave checkerboards and windows, and doubleweave twill pick-up.

Students will be using 8-harness table or floor looms warped according to instructions (At the time of registration let us know if you will be bringing your own loom or using one of the Guilds.)

Hands on Color: A Practical Exploration of Color, Fiber, and Weaving
with Cameron Taylor Brown

Cameron Taylor BrownDive up to your elbows into big piles of luscious yarns and discover the exciting world of color in this hands-on exploration. This workshop explores the glorious color components of hue, value, and intensity - while noting the added effects of fiber and yarn texture. You create harmonious color compositions while learning the language of monochromatic, analogous and complementary color relationships. Then experiment with how colors mix in plain, twill and satin structures and create fabrics with your new color, fiber and weave vocabulary. By the end of the workshop you’ll have a confident "eye for color" and a notebook overflowing with beautiful color combinations.

with Robyn Spady

Robyn SpadyHate to warp, but love to weave? Want more versatility from a single warp? Then this is a workshop for you! At the same time, participants are presented with the basics of different structures and how to adapt a single threading to weave a number of different weaves, including concepts such as star vs. rose fashion, weaving on opposites, and echo treadling.
