Pedestrian Tips

Pedestrian Safety

The University of Minnesota outlines good safety tips for pedestrians (see more at U of M’s Parking & Transportation Services)

  • Wear reflective-colored clothing at night to make you more visible.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings. Don’t be distracted with electronic devices.
  • Drivers are required to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, but the vehicle has the right-of-way when it is lawfully inside the intersection before the signal changes or the pedestrian leaves the curb. Don’t take chances; stay alert for oncoming traffic.
  • Walk confidently; look ahead and make eye contact.
  • Walk with a friend.
  • If you think you are being followed, divert your route to a populated area.
  • Trust your instincts. If someone makes you uncomfortable, move away from that person.

For those who drive and park around the Textile Center building:

  • Prospect Park Neighborhood, where the Textile Center and WGM are located, is the most established community in the metropolitan area. Within walking distance of our building, there is an elementary school that is also a venue for adult learning, as well as a community church. The neighbors are proactive when it comes to safety. The sidewalks are clear and well lit.
  • As good general practice in an urban environment, do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Do not leave purses, backpacks, briefcases within visible sight inside your vehicle.
