January 11, 2018 | Artist Lecture: Heather MacKenzie, “Thinking Through the Loom”

Every tool has its own loose set of parameters. In her artwork, Heather MacKenzie draws inspiration from the looms she has used and their various capabilities and limitations. She will talk about her work in the context of Ghanaian strip looms, Indian mechanical Jacquards, and Norwegian TC-2’s, among others, and how her study of traditional textiles in different parts of the world has influenced her approach to weaving. In a blend of storytelling and technical demonstration, she will show documentation on the mechanisms of several looms and explain her obsession with complex weave structures. She will bring hands-on examples of her work, and a tabletop Jacquard loom from India for an informal demonstration following her talk.
